When a disagreement or controversy arises between individuals and/or businesses outside of the criminal context, it is typically referred to as a “civil matter.” These types of disputes can often be settled between the parties privately without a lawsuit, but, when they cannot, you need someone that is ready, willing, and able to handle the matter in court.
Once a dispute escalates to a lawsuit, it must be litigated before a judge through arguments at hearings and an investigative process known as discovery. If the parties are still unable to resolve the dispute, it will ultimately proceed to trial to be decided by the judge or selected jury.
